As always: many of us get too many emails already, even before this pandemic.
So, if you would like these to stop, please feel free to say so. (You won’t be the first one.)
Sunday, April 5:
A few of you have told me that perhaps these emails were too lengthy. Now your feelings are confirmed by an expert. Today we spoke with our son Elliott in DC, and his 12-year-old daughter, Lina, who is quite mature for her age.
I asked Lina if she was reading my emails, and she said she was.
Then I asked her to be honest with me and tell me what she thought of them. She said: “Zayde, I think they are a little too long”. From the mouths of babes……
We are going to do two Passover seders this week.
On the first night, with our son Adam and family, in Vancouver, via FaceTime.
On the 2nd night, with Nadine’s brother Curt and his wife Deborah in Thousand Oaks, and their son Benjamin at Stanford. Using Zoom. We don’t have a laptop. So plan to move our desktop iMac into the living area for this occasion.
Monday, April 6:
It started raining hard last night, and into the morning. If I seem somewhat obsessive about rain, well I am. For those of you who do not live in a semi-desert climate, this may be hard to understand.
Our rainy season is typically from Thanksgiving to Passover/Easter, and our rainfall has been below average this year. So, we are glad to get some more before it stops completely for about 7 months.
Sleeping in later, without the normal reasons to rise and get dressed early. Staying in PJs for an hour...or more. The pace of life has definitely slowed down. But, although we have no outside the home activities anymore, yet there seems to be much to do. The new normal.
Tuesday, April 7:
We are all in this together it seems: in LA, in California, in America, in the whole world. Some sooner than others, but I think all eventually.
But some are much more exposed to danger than others. Charles Blow writes in today’s NYTimes:
Of workers in the top 25% earning quartile, over 60% can “telework” from home; of workers in the bottom 25% earning quartile, less than 10% can “telework” from home.
Nadine talks to the Instacart delivery man. He is working 12-hour shifts. She tries to give him a cash tip but he won’t take it.
Wednesday, April 8:
This stay-at-home period has stimulated a deluge of creativity, resulting in many more emails and texts and FaceTimes and ZoomMeetings:
- Coronavirus newsletters, of varying levels of authenticity and credibility
- Ladies' chain-letters requesting recipe submissions
- Funny dog and cat videos
- Alternate Haggadahs for this unique Passover season
Humor?:
Seen in the personal ads section:
"Single man with toilet paper seeks woman with hand sanitizer for good, clean fun.”
Things to look forward to:
“Fauda", season 3, is coming to Netflix on April 16. Israeli secret police vs Palestinian insurgents. Violent and anxiety-provoking, but very good. If you have not seen it before, better start with the first season.
At the end of this year, with so many couples being isolated for so long, expect a rash of new-borns...and a rash of divorces.
That’s all for now:
For those who celebrate Passover: Hag Sameach
Stay safe, wash your hands, call your mother, keep your distance, and love one another.

El Coyote, a local landmark Mexican restaurant (1937), with red naugahyde upholstery and waitresses in billowing colorful dresses, and one of many local settings in “Once upon a Time…in Hollywood”, is closed. Not even for takeout.
From our daughter Ashley; an early Zoom meeting.
For extra credit: The housekeeper was named “Alice Nelson”.
Q: who was the actress that played Alice?
(Answer in next email)
